This art and personal development camp invites kids to proudly explore their racial and cultural identity through writing, graphic stories, theater games, improvisation, and mask making. Each day of camp features a different amazing instructor! Tina La Padula is an actress, activist and former education director of Seattle Arts Corps. Carina del Rosario is a photographer and teaching artist who founded IDEA Odyssey, a collective that nurtures and promotes artists of color and artists who explore culture, identity and diversity in their visual art; Victoria Clayton is a local artist, grief facilitator and Spanish teacher; Amy Burtaine is a racial equity training and social justice educator with over 25 years facilitating workshops and community dialogues; Thomas Elliott is a writer, educator and the director of Alternative Education Options for Vashon School District.

Camp details: Monday – Improv! Explore culture, identity and self-expression through improvised acting and storytelling. Using theater and writing prompts we’ll explore who we are, what we know, what we fear and what we hope. Unleash your radical imagination and examine your power to speak truth and flip negative narratives into positive outcomes. Tuesday – Story Board! Take an important moment from your life and take the first steps for turning it into a graphic story. You’ll learn how to use a storyboard to plan your scenes and develop your drawing skills to turn one of those scenes into a graphic panel.

Wednesday – Multi-media Project! Explore our intersecting identities through a sculpture/writing/painting project. You’ll learn to make Platonic Solids out of cardboard (with a wee bit of math), and adorn them as you reflect on the many facets of YOU.

Thursday – Mask Making! People of all cultures have used masks in rituals and as objects of transformation. Create a plaster mask of your face and decorate it with elements of your personal and cultural identity.

Friday – Body Maps! End the week creating a life-size map of your body; a playful multi-media project focusing on your unique gifts and values.

Artist Instructors:

Tina LaPadula-Over the past 2 decades, Tina has poured much of her creative energy into teaching artistry and equitable arts access efforts with Seattle and Highline Public Schools and especially with Arts Corps, the award winning arts education non-profit she helped found in 2000. As a teaching artist Tina teaches improvised storytelling and performance residencies and out of school time classes at various sites including, Centrum Arts, Seattle Children’s Theatre and The University of Washington. She serves as a consultant facilitating workshops on equity and arts learning for the Seattle Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture, public schools, cultural organizations and conferences. Tina supports the growth and development of teaching artists locally and nationally, most notably as the founder of the Seattle Teaching Artist Network, as a faculty member for the WA State Teaching Artist Training Lab, and as the former chair of the Association of Teaching Artists.

Carina A. del Rosario-Born in the Philippines, Carina immigrated to the United States as a young girl. Her photography work has been exhibited in galleries and museums, and mounted as public installations in the Washington and Arizona. In addition to her own creative and documentary projects, Carina is a teaching artist and helps youth use visual arts to explore their communities, advocate for what matters for them, and express their own experiences. She is on the faculty of the Washington State Teaching Artists Training Lab and collaborates with non-profit organizations and educational institutions to help illustrate issues such as poverty, education, health and civil rights. She also founded IDEA Odyssey, a collective that nurtures and promotes artists of color and artists who explore culture, identity and diversity in their visual art. In 2013, the International Examiner honored her with a Community Voice Award for Individual Artists.

Thomas Elliott, PhD. is an educator with 28 years experience. Thomas has taught as a philosophy professor, as K-12 math teacher, as a creative writing teacher, and as a professor of multicultural and gender studies. He is currently the Director of Alternative Learning for the Vashon school district. Thomas also writes poetry and makes stuff.

Victoria Paloma is an artist and teacher who has lived on Vashon for 23 years. She studied art at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and later became a faculty member. Originally from Mexico, Victoria has explored many art forms: painting, installation, photography and mixed media sculpture. She has been an artist member at Valise gallery in Vashon, as well as galleries in Chicago. Her work has explored subjects such as immigration and bi-cultural issues. Victoria facilitates grief workshops using art and rituals as a vehicle for healing. She teaches at Chautauqua Elementary School and Vashon Center for the Arts.
