Their songs are all fair game for joyous reinterpretation by one of today’s most compelling voices in jazz, LaVon Hardison. This electrifying performer will be performing in the Katherine L White Hall on Friday, October 4 at 7:30pm as part of the 31st Annual Earshot Jazz Festival. “I try to make music that delights me,” she says. “When I first started singing jazz I felt that I had to do it a certain way. I had to be sultry and sophisticated. Now I follow my gut and I follow the song. I am more open musically. Also, time mixed with life experience awakens new depths in songs.” LaVon was a featured performer at the 2009 Festival of World Sacred Music in New Delhi, India. In 2016, LaVon won the Seattle-Kobe Sister City Jazz Vocalist Audition at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley, claiming the prize of a jazz-soaked journey to Japan, performing in Kobe, Osaka, and Tokyo. In 2017 she was named the EarShot Jazz Vocalist of the Year. LaVon has also hosted a weekly radio show, “The Jazz Experience” on KAOS-FM. Born in Boston, LaVon’s path has woven through dead-end day jobs, church choirs, commercial voiceover work, musical theater, TV acting, opera, stage acting, inspirational music, a swing duo, and more. This winding road led to LaVon Hardison’s fourth album, There Will Be Trouble (self-released, 1 October 2018). She has clearly found her own voice, distilling all of that experience into a pure musical elixir. She calls her music jazz, but soul and country and pop and punk and other influences bubble tantalizingly just beneath the surface. With over fifty events across the Seattle area, the Earshot Jazz Festival features a dynamic array of resident, national, and international artists. Respected for celebrating the art form’s leading edges and cultural heritage, the festival brings jazz greats from around the world into creative collaboration with area audiences and artists. Vashon Center for the Arts is proud to host three concerts as part of the 2019 festival,: LaVon Hardinson on 10/4, Joel Ross on 10/18, and Kiki Valera on 10/25. The VCA performances are generously sponsored by Flintworks.
